Statement of Values and Inclusion

We recognize that we live and organize on the unceded and stolen ancestral territory (təmxʷúlaʔx) of the Sinixt people.

Purpose

Nelson Pride events are organized by a collection of volunteers who work our hardest to create safer spaces of joy and togetherness for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in the West Kootenay region and beyond!

Diversity

We welcome and respect everyone: Two Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, Non-binary, Questioning, and all those who have their own beautiful way of telling the world who they are.

When you attend our meetings, events, or spaces, we want you to feel: You are enough, You have dignity here, We see You.

Equity

We recognize the many long standing and systemic inequities experienced by 2SLGBTQ+ people and as such prioritize event organizers and those compensated for services (performers, designers, etc.) who are themselves of 2SLGBTQ+ community. We welcome the support and presence of allies.

Community Culture

As community organizers we seek to foster a community culture that is inclusive, consent based, sex positive, accountable, transparent and growth oriented. It hurts to hear members of our own community say things that are discriminatory. At all pride based community events and organizing we prohibit the presence of signage, statements or other displays of intolerance or exclusion which are based on:

• Race
• Colour
• Sexual Orientation
• Religion
• Gender Identity or Expression
• Age
• Disability
• Sex (including pregnancy and childbearing)
• Marital status
• Substance use or dependence
• Family status
• A conviction for which a pardon has been granted or a record suspended
• National or ethnic origin

We are working to uplift the voices of those in our community who are most marginalized, and encourage each other to unlearn our own internalized racism, transphobia, homophobia, sexism and ableism.
